Frequently Asked Questions

If you are new to Saint Francis Parish & Outreach, you may have questions about who we are, how we worship, and what to expect when you visit. We hope these answers offer clarity and reassurance as you get to know the life of the parish.

Are you Roman Catholic?

No. We are Old Catholic, not Roman Catholic. We stand in the ancient Catholic faith, maintain apostolic succession, celebrate the sacraments, and worship in a recognizably Catholic tradition, but we are not under papal jurisdiction.

What does Old Catholic mean?

Old Catholic means that we understand ourselves as part of the ancient Catholic tradition of the Church: creedal, sacramental, apostolic, and rooted in the life of the undivided Church. At Saint Francis Parish & Outreach, we emphasize our historic roots in Utrecht in the Netherlands, dating back to 695 AD.

Are you part of the Union of Utrecht?

No. We are not part of the Union of Utrecht.

What is worship like at Saint Francis?

Our worship is reverent, sacramental, and recognizably Catholic. If you have attended a Roman Catholic, Anglican, or Episcopal liturgy, much of it will feel familiar.

When and where do you meet?

We gather for Sunday Eucharist at 3:00 PM Eastern Time at 557 Greene Street, Augusta, GA 30901. We also offer Bible study on Thursday at 8:00 PM Eastern Time online.

Can I watch online?

Yes. Mass is livestreamed online through YouNow, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and the OCCI Video Streaming site. Bible study is currently available on YouNow and TikTok.

Do I need to be Old Catholic to attend?

No. You do not need to be Old Catholic to visit, worship with us, or get to know the parish.

Who is welcome at Saint Francis?

All are welcome. Saint Francis Parish & Outreach is an inclusive and affirming church and a safe space for all people. We welcome LGBTQIA+ persons, immigrants, families, seekers, former churchgoers, and all who are looking for a parish home rooted in grace and truth.

Do you practice open communion?

Yes. We practice an open communion. If you come desiring to receive the grace of God in the Holy Eucharist, you are welcome to come forward.

Do you deny the sacraments to anyone?

No. We do not deny the sacraments to those who come seeking the grace of God.

Are LGBTQIA+ people welcome?

Yes. Fully. We are an inclusive and affirming parish, and LGBTQIA+ persons are welcome in the full life of the church.

Are immigrants welcome?

Yes. We are committed to being a safe and welcoming parish for immigrants and for all who may be seeking a church home marked by dignity, compassion, and peace.

What should I wear?

Come as you are. Some people dress more formally and others more casually.

What if I have questions or doubts?
